[Current Music |Was (Not Was) - Spy in the House of Love]

The most evil thing ever is when I run out of (or forget) my medication for more than about two days straight, because the withdrawal is comparable to going off heroin. Or having vertigo and the flu, whatever.

It gives me plenty of time lying in bed and having weird dreams and thinking up weird/stupid stories, but on the whole I tend to prefer not being nauseated at the time. Just a thought.

Goal for today is set on leaving the house, so we'll see how that goes. Oh god, I'm already bored. This is stupid. :/ And I want to go out and get books but have no clean underwear.

This is my own fault for not doing laundry, but I'll complain about it anyway.

Hack Thrown By Hack Phrase [May. 12th, 2008|09:58 pm]

urbaniak
In this much-circulated outtake (thrown off of YouTube but still up at Gawker) of Bill O'Reilly wrapping up an old "Inside Edition" episode, Bill-O is scripted to introduce a Sting video by saying "And now here's Sting to play us out." I didn't think it was possible that Bill O'Reilly could be unacquainted with any cliche, but the experienced broadcaster reacts to these teleprompted words like they're some sort of cipher encryption. "Whatever it is, it's not right on the teleprompter, I don't know what that is, I've never seen that," he says sharply. Not realizing that it's not the Sting video but the words introducing the Sting video that has Bill flustered, an off-camera staff member gently admonishes "No, there is. We are gonna do Sting, yeah." His problem unaddressed, Bill-O now refuses to accept that the words before him are actually words. "I can't read it, there's NO WORDS ON IT! THERE'S NO WORDS THERE: 'TO PLAY US OUT!' What does that mean, 'TO PLAY US OUT?'" he stammers, repeating the confounding phrase as if he can't believe that everyone else in the room doesn't agree that it's complete gibberish.

He makes a final, Herculean effort to solve the riddle by staring silently at the teleprompter for several seconds but it's as if the words have been put there simply to taunt him. "What is--I don't know what that means, 'TO PLAY US OUT!'" he cries again. "WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!"

His staff no help at all, Bill finally summons up the "context clues" training he received in grammar school and weakly asks if "to play us out" mean something like "to end the show." This theory affirmed, he attempts the wrap-up a couple of times but anger and frustration have gotten the better of him and keeps screwing up. "We'll do it live!" he screams and as the offscreen voice starts to speak O'Reilly cuts him off with the defensive fury of a raging king or a cornered animal. "WE'LL DO IT LIVE!! FUCK IT!! I'll write it and WE'LL DO IT LIVE!!! FUCKIN' THING SUCKS!!!"

But Bill O'Reiily is a pro and seconds after this outburst he offers a flawless outro in his own words: "...that is it for us today, I'm Bill O'Reilly, thanks again for watching, we'll leave you with Sting and a cut off his new album. Take it away..."

The "take it away" is like a cool breeze caressing the viewer as the show transitions to Sting's dulcet tones. Masterful. But this moment of calm is all technique and when it is over O'Reilly seethes on, tearing off his jacket and screaming at his staff. Woe betide anyone or anything that thinks it can challenge this man in his kingdom, the English language included. At his say-so, words cease being words. Bill O'Reilly, one might say, walks in fields of gold.

And now here's Sting to play us out.

P.S.: My wife notes "He's doesn't know 'falafel' from 'loofah,' you can't expect him to know 'play us out.'"

I'm sick with a cold AGAIN. Dammit, dammit, dammit. Yesterday my throat was killing me (it's gone now) and now today I JUST CAN'T BREATHE.

I've been lying in bed for over a day and wake up in hot sweats, but if I don't have the covers on I start to get cold. Head hurts and my body aches, (I feel dizzy now) along with it being hard to breathe.

I'm lying back down. D:

The first five people who reply to this post, and who re-post this challenge (I don't care about that bit): YOU WIN!!!

For your prize, I will send you a gift.

It might be something I've made, or something cool from my hidden stash of obscure grooviness. It might be a rubber duck, or a toy, or a pretty picture, or a book I think you might enjoy. A useful object, a tchotchke, a piece of jewelry, or something else that is taking up room in my house.

Whatever it is, I promise I will get it to you in 30 days of your posted comment or less (or at least, within a reasonable amount of time), and you must e-mail me your mailing address. Even if you think I already have it.

Annoying Couple Real Life Version of Glaser/Benjamin Sketch [May. 12th, 2008|04:09 pm]

urbaniak
Tom Owens and Diana Helmer moved to Perry in December and engaged in an unusual habit.

They knew no one but waved at everybody.

"I've noticed the effects a wave has," Helmer said. "When you wave it's like a smile. A smile always changes your mood. You can't smile and not be changed."

. . .

Isn't it interesting that this couple is friendly and people think they are nutty?" Perry Mayor Viivi Shirley said.

. . .

While walking toward downtown, the two head down Willis Avenue, the busy street they live on. They begin waving to every driver.

Helmer lets loose an enthusiastic parade wave, arm overhead, bending at wrist and elbow. Owens goes overhead with a single swipe, all elbow.

The first two car passengers return it.

Owens' idea was born after the two moved to Perry from Marshalltown, the hometown they had returned to after living in Missouri, Wisconsin and Washington state.

Even Marshalltown was too big. They realized no one talked to the grocery store cashier.

"We didn't want to be that way," Owens said. "Everyone matters. No one is invisible."

The couple could have moved anywhere. Their jobs are portable - writers of nearly 80 children's books between them - with no kids and two cats. They chose Perry for its smaller size.

. . .

One reason they both left journalism many years ago, they said, is because adults wanted to read bad news, children didn't.

But adults, they found, maintain a childlike spirit in a wave.

I may possibly have gone to see Iron Man again today. Yes.

So...Marvel comics fans. I know there are some of you on my flist. Help a newbie out. Comics are huge and terrifying and, while in DC I have an idea of what I want to look for, in the Marvel universe I am rudderless. What's out there that's good? I'm looking, basically, for good comics that aren't completely inaccessible to the new reader. Beyond that, I'm easy. (I'd prefer things that are collected in trades because they're generally easier for me to acquire but even that's not a set in stone requirement.) Rec me characters, plot arcs, writers, what have you. What, in the greater Marvel universe, do you like to read?

Because the gods know I need more fandoms. 8)

Portage Theater Double Features [May. 12th, 2008|11:54 am]

horror_movies

[morehustle]
I don't think this has ever been posted about in this group, so I'm going to try to help spread the word. I'm going to cross-post this a bit, too.

One on Friday every month, Horrorbles has been sponsoring a double-feature horror show at the Portage Theater up at 4050 N. Milwaukee here in Chicago. The shows are themed-- February was Happy Birthday to Me and April Fool's Day (the original), March was The Stuff and The Incredible Melting Man, April was a Dr. Phibes double feature, etc. The May double feature this past weekend was I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and I Was a Teenage Werewolf.

The crowds have been getting bigger each month, and rightly so. It's $10 for a great double feature at a huge, gorgeous, historic theater-- it's worth the price of admission just to look around the place. It's amazing.

Next month on Friday, June 13th (!) will be the next show: a Hammer Films double feature of Dracula: Prince of Darkness and Vampire Circus. The first show starts at 8:00 p.m. and the second will start around 9:45 p.m. Admission is $10 for both films.

Come out and support a great event at an awesome theater! Keep the double feature alive!

Oooooooo I am so disappointed in my external hard drive. I'm going to have to call OWC tomorrow and get an RMA or whatever and have it sent back and... hopefully repaired or something. They'll probably replace the drive and leave the enclosure or something. Seems like kind of a pain. I probably just should have gotten a drive and enclosure kit and put it together myself. But I'm a dumbass and had to go and get the predone one.

Holy crap there was this awesome computer in at work today. First, the checkin description as per the customer stated that the computer would turn on and 'charm' but there was nothing on the screen. By 'charm' of course... they meant 'chime'. But it led to an awesome day in the repair room of 'God, what's wrong with this computer, why won't it charm??' And on top of THAT there was a label on the computer stating how to reset the "PRAMs" which... is totally hilarious. It's like saying 'I want to search the Googles' or 'Have you seen the YouTubes around lately?' I sometimes pluralize things for comedic effect but that kind of takes the geek cake.

And there was another label on the computer stating 'Hold t on startup to become target disk'. Now I am become target disk and so can you! *laughs hysterically* The proper terminology would be 'Hold t on startup to boot computer in target disk mode' but I think 'BECOME TARGET DISK' wins.

That computer had me in freakin' stitches all day.

The 'charm' comment will no doubt stick with us. And join its friends... 'floopy drive'... 'flower fan'... etc. I fucking love typos.

I'm going to make a locked post about baby showers later. Stay tuned please.

2nd round at Ren. Faire [May. 10th, 2008|09:41 pm]

[Current Music |Atreyu- The Crimson]

Ren. Faire was way better than last time; it was cooler and I didn't throw up. I didn't do my full dress up costume, but wore a lot of jewelry... And sadly lost an expensive hand garment. D: I just hope whoever found it takes good care of it and uses it to its full expectancy. A lot of guys were hitting on me too. Which I found odd cause no one hits on me, and this one guy read me a poem, handing me the poem and kissed my hand. Mom got a picture. *o* Had Bday money from my dad so I bought a few really nice things that I can wear for my pirate costume and then some. Also got a cute happy Buddha statue (it's small) and a book on the Gods and Goddess of Hinduism and Buddhism.

We also got to see a lot of shows; A comedian who did all these crazy acts, african dancing, jousting, knife throwing, a whip show... and I'm sure more but my mind is fizzled.

Earlier in the day, there was this man dressed as this giant tree and tons of film crew surrounding him. Three people dressed in a mixture of punk and ren. clothes were following him around. Later that day, we saw more filming and assumed that it was going to be a commercial... When mom and I were waiting for jousting, these ladies next to us told us that Tommy Lee was here and filming for his reality show. (Tommy Lee has a reality show?!?!?) At the end of the day when the Belly Dancers and Moroccans were playing their drums and having people dance, we saw those same three punk/ren. guys and sure enough there was Tommy Lea dancing in the crowd with the dancers. He was having such a good time his crew had to force him out and he had the biggest smile on his face when he left; it was kinda cute. (Cause you know, I'm neutral about the guy, let alone I don't know what he did other than marry Pamela Anderson. Was he in a band?)

Also, during jousting, there were a trio of gangster looking guys at our area and they really got into it; running across and having the crowd scream with him... Turns out they were Tommy's clique. Weird. And there was this guy in front of us who was totally drunk and started shouting like he was at a football game. Cussing when there were kids right by him, standing up and jumping, and yelling that he wanted them to cut the guy's head off. O.o;

Today was a most excellent day!

It just sucks I have to work on Mother's Day... (And when I had to work Christmas morning AND Easter morning.) Thanks Gale, tear me away from my family like I don't love them or something. Christ, you never do this to the other receptionists.

Dear Library Patron,

You do not get to call me "hon". You don't know me. I realize that I'm not wearing a name tag (because I hate them and no one has ever required me to wear one at Kingston) but that doesn't mean that I'm not a person you should treat with respect. Yes, I'm in a service position. Again, that doesn't mean that you don't have to address me respectfully.

If you feel you absolutely have to address me with some sort of name substitute (which I don't see that you do, as I'm the only one here for you to be talking to), you can call me "Miss". Or "Ma'am", though you probably wouldn't use the latter as I'm significantly younger than you. That is pretty much why we have terms like "sir", "miss", and "ma'am" in the language - to act as respectful substitutes when one doesn't know a person's name. (It's regrettable that we don't have one for women that's easy to say and not tied to marriage. Ah, well.)

"Hon" is a diminutive. It's acceptable to use it with your friends or people you know fairly well. My parents, for example, are allowed to call me "hon". You, last time I checked, are not my parent. With strangers, the effect of using a diminutive is condescending, dismissive, and disrespectful. You might want to look to that.

Thank you.
