Okay, hate me if you will, but I was disappointed in Cloverfield.

And here's why:

- Monster = WAAAAAY too CGI'ed. Scary at first glance, but then just boring and ugly. The little dudes were so overly CGI'ed, especially during the scene when the dude slams one in the door. *yawn*

- How Liz could stand, let alone walk and run after being skewered by a large pole and left there for hours = very very unlikely

- My favorite character (the cameraman) died. Yes, I get why, and yeah, it's been done before. It's called "Blair Witch Project." Whatshername in that got too excited too and wanted to film and look what happened to her.

- Acting in general? Pretty darned wooden.

- Some totally SCHMALTORIFFIC scenes that were unnecessary and slowed down the story

- No one really was THAT upset anyone died, especially the main character after his brother died. Granted, they're in shock, but it was mostly due to bad acting. :/

The first 30 minutes were really fun. The rest just went downhill from there.

Disappointing.

I'm not reading your post, as I haven't seen it yet. I've heard the same from a lot of my friends though. I'll still check it out anyways.

I thought the whole point was that you didn't SEE the monsters!? I've heard that it was the camera movement that got to most people. And I usually prepare myself for my favourite character to die because they usually do!

I liked the thought of it but I wasn't sure I wanted to see it, even less sure now! I'm not sure I've actually heard a positive review about it.

Cloverfield was awesome.

1. The monster never is really clearly explainable in appearance. Even when you do see it, it looks different everytime, at least slightly.

2. It was as realistic as a giant monster attack could be. Because could you REALLY survive something like that? Doubtful.

3. I loved Hud too, and that made it all the worse when he died. But why cliche' it? The romantic leads die too, and I didn't think that would happen. Also, foreshadowing was beautifully done with Hud looking into the camera before they climbed the building and saying "if this is the last thing you see, then I'm dead." And it was, his face was visible after he was attacked, laying on the ground dead. The filmmakers knew he would be the most loved character, hence he had the most painful death. Spare no one. Just because he's cute and funny doesn't mean he's safe.

4. For the budget they had, it was AMAZINGLY well done.

5. The acting I thought was actully good. Shock and being numb to what was happening is the only thing you could do at that point. It was very reminiscent of 911 which was a lot of the point.

6. The viral marketing was brilliant and the secret little ins within the film were also great.

Did you notice the surprise at the end? In the top right corner in the last shot from Coney Island? Nice touch.

Personally, I enjoyed the movie (once I saw it on DVD, mind you, as the theater release was...a piece of blurry shit). The only complaints you have I can agree on is the whole skewer + walk thing. I also thought that was incredibly stupid. And the monster come the end (right as he eats camera guy) did look pretty hokey, though I liked the monster(s) the rest of the time :) Although personally, I thought the acting was pretty good.
